BFS Welcomes New Faculty and Staff

September 21, 2017

BFS began the 2017-2018 year by welcoming five new faculty members and one new administrator (from left to right: Sarah Crofts, Jennifer Gibson, Kara Shaw, Jennifer Brittingham, Jessica Wiley-Ritzmann, and Tonia Maschi).

Sarah Crofts ’87 is excited to return to BFS as the new Director of Admissions and Marketing.  She spent nine happy years growing up at the school and is thrilled to be back, sharing her love of BFS with new families.  Most recently, Sarah was the Marketing and Communications Assistant at Newtown Friends School. Much of her earlier career was spent teaching middle school science, in Seattle, Boston and more recently at The Pennington School. She holds a B.A. from Haverford College and earned a Masters in Education at Antioch University Seattle.  Sarah is a member of Solebury Friends Meeting and lives in Yardley.

Jennifer Gibson, the new Grade 4 teacher is not new to BFS, as her two sons have been students here for the past two years, during which time she was also substitute teaching at the school.  Her connection to the school goes further back, however, because Jennifer’s mother, Katherine (Haverstick) Hewitt ’67 and her aunt Sally (Haverstick) Phillips ’69 graduated from BFS.  Jennifer previously was a fourth grade teacher at the Delaware Township School and she also spent three years as an Instructor and Curriculum Developer for a gifted education program called Ingenuity Academic Talent Center in Flemington, NJ. Jennifer holds both a B.A. and M.S. in Elementary education. Her family lives in Stockton, NJ.

Kara Shaw is teaching language arts to Grades 6, 7 and 8.  Kara most recently taught in the Clinton (NJ) Public Schools and prior to that, at Bridgewater Raritan Middle School. She loves teaching language arts to students in this age group. She earned her undergraduate degree from Villanova University and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Kean University.  Prior to teaching, Kara worked in the marketing field in New York City for many years, and it was when she was doing pro-bono marketing work for a non-profit that served young people, that she began to recognize the spark of interest that led her on her path to become a teacher.  Kara also appreciates bringing her two sons to BFS with her - they are in Grade 3 and Grade 6.

Jennifer Brittingham is serving as the Assistant Teacher in Grade 1, working with Rachel Griffin-Snipes.  Jen came to BFS from the Agnes Irwin School, where she taught in the Visual and Performing Arts department for the past 14 years. She introduced a Media Arts program in that department and additionally, she was the middle school robotics mentor for six years. Jen earned a B.S. and M.S. in Textile Design from Philadelphia University. Jen and her husband have a small farm in Stockton, NJ where they take care of three rescued miniature donkeys, three goats, two miniature horses, a Norwegian Fjord, and and two dogs.  Jen’s passion for international travel will fit right in with BFS’s JEM program - she has visited Thailand, India, Costa Rica, Peru, Kenya, Tanzania, and Europe.

Jessica Wiley-Ritzmann joined the faculty in early October as the new Reading Specialist.  She earned a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State and then a Masters in Primary Education (focus on Parental Involvement and Literacy) from The University of London.  Her teaching experience spans a range of grade levels and the globe - she has taught in Florida, London, and most recently at the International School of Hamburg, Germany.  She returned to the States in recent years, coming back to Doylestown where she grew up (she is a graduate of Central Bucks East High School).  Outside of teaching, Jessica enjoys spending quality time with her husband and their young daughter and son.

Tonia Maschi is the new Athletic Director and physical education teacher.  A graduate of Springfield College, Tonia worked at the Riverdale Country School in New York City as their athletic trainer and physical education teacher for 17 years.  Her family has been living in Doylestown for the past six years.  Tonia is thrilled to have her children also joining her at BFS, she has a daughter in the Kindergarten class, and her son is in Grade 5.  Years before she had her kids, Tonia climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro!
