Benjamin Weiner ’03 Performed Concert for Kids at BFS
We were thrilled to welcome Benjamin Weiner ’03 back to campus this past Saturday, April 14th, to perform a free children’s concert. It was a beautiful “summer” day, and the children and their parents who came into the auditorium were treated to some fabulous kids’ music.
Benjamin is a Brooklyn-based songwriter, playwright, composer and teacher who performs music for children with his talking backpack, Princess Backpack. Benjamin was introduced by Nancy Sandberg, long-time BFS faculty member, who has known Benjamin since he was very young. Nancy’s son and Benjamin’s classmate, Jesse Sandberg ’03 (who assisted with props on stage), continue to be close friends. Benjamin reflected on what a special place BFS was for him as a young child, partly because he made lifelong friends, and then he had the kids in the audience help him “find” Princess Backpack, who had been hiding behind the stage curtains.
Benjamin sang several songs from his 2017 CD release, Princess Backpack and Benjamin, including “Big Like a Lion”, “Griffin as a Pet”, and “Drop it Like a Toddler”. Princess Backpack joined in the fun by singing a rap song about herself. Because Benjamin encouraged the children in the audience to get up and dance if they wanted to, the area in front of the stage was a gaggle of children, moving and laughing, as they enjoyed the songs. Towards the end of the concert, Benjamin played his song, “Bubble Wrap”, which was super exciting for the kids, because Jesse had thrown out a huge roll of bubble wrap that the kids could pop during the song, creating added accompaniment.
In addition to being a songwriter, Benjamin is a composer and playwright. After graduating from BFS, he attended Central Bucks East High School for a year, and then his family moved to New York City, where he graduated from The Beacon School in Manhattan. He then earned a B.A. in theater from Columbia University.
A huge thank you to Benjamin Weiner for coming back to BFS to share part of his artistic pursuits with our youngest children and the extended local community. Everyone loved getting to meet you, Princess Backpack, and your catchy songs continue to run through our heads!
