Upper School Students Earn Recognition in French and Spanish Language Skills
Upper School Students at BFS were recently honored for their mastery of foreign languages—both French and Spanish. In March, thirty-three BFS students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades participated in Le Grand Concours, a National French Contest sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. The contest assessed the students’ performance based upon major grammatical concepts, aural and written comprehension, and cultural topics. Overall the students’ performance was outstanding. Twenty-nine students were recognized for their achievement. BFS had two gold medal winners, five silver medal winners, nine bronze medal winners, and thirteen honorable mentions. The students and their families were invited to the awards ceremony, La Distribution des Prix, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Chestnut Hill College, and received certificates and medals.
Buckingham Friends School has participated in Le Grand Concours for the past seventeen years. This year there were close to 100,000 students in the United States and 3,000 in the Philadelphia area who participated in the contest.
BFS Upper School students were also honored for their skills in Spanish. In March, ten Spanish students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade participated in the 2018 National Spanish Exam. This exam is comprised of four sections: vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. Seven BFS students received national recognition: two bronze medals, and five honorable mentions.
This exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and is administered in an online format through the Quia Corporation. The purpose of the NSE is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency in the study of Spanish, as well as to stimulate further interest in the teaching and study of the Spanish language. Over 150,000 students participated in 2018.
Congratulations Buckingham Friends School French and Spanish students!
