Second grade is a time when children enjoy the privileges and responsibilities that come with being the “leaders” of the Lower School. They take on this leadership role while remaining under the gentle guidance of “Big Friends” in eighth grade. Second grade children continue to develop peaceful conflict resolution skills in the classroom and on the playground. Playtime at school allows for independent decision-making and social development. A healthy balance between academic work and enthusiastic play is encouraged in an effort to educate the whole child.
Love of learning takes hold in the second grade where children are inquisitive, motivated and begin to take initiative for their own learning. Academic time is structured to encourage interaction, exploration, and independent growth. The work is hands-on and meaningful, emphasizing critical thinking, self-evaluation, and problem solving. Opportunities for whole class, small group, partner work, and independent study are structured throughout the day. The academic program includes the study of language arts, math, social studies, science, art, music, foreign language, physical education, human development and shop. Second grade children perform twice a year on stage, during the Holiday Program and their class play. At the close of second grade, the children are ready to make the exciting transition to Middle School.
