A Transformative JEM Trip to Costa Rica

Upper School students participating in the JEM trip to Costa Rica over Spring Break enjoyed an unforgettable experience filled with cultural immersion, service, and adventure. Students visited a local, family-run sugar cane and coffee farm, where they roasted and ground beans, swam in the farm’s watering hole, and shared a homemade meal before playing games with members of the host community.

The group also made a meaningful impact through service, painting a mural for a local PreK–6 school of 13 students and helping to establish a recycling system. Their journey continued with outdoor adventures, including whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River and zip lining through the canopy. On their final full day, students gathered for a Meeting for Worship and concluded their trip with a joyful farewell dinner—celebrating new friendships, shared experiences, and lasting memories.

Daisy Rodriguez Kelly, who thoughtfully organized and chaperoned the trip, reflected on the students’ experience and growth:

“We witnessed growth in many forms—from students facing personal fears like heights, trying new foods, and navigating a different language, to embracing each challenge with a ‘can-do’ attitude that was inspiring to watch. One of the most meaningful moments was seeing our students connect with local children. They didn’t just visit Costa Rica—they left it a little better than they found it.”

Parents echoed Daisy's sentiments about JEM trip:

"What an amazing- once-in-a-lifetime trip Daisy and Rachel organized to Costa Rica. Our daughter came back seven days after departing as a more thoughtful, compassionate, articulate, and best version of herself. And couldn’t stop raving about "the best trip of her life”. You’ve got the best of the best on your team!"

Special thanks to Daisy Rodriguez Kelly for her leadership, to chaperone Rachel Griffin-Snipes, and to JEM Coordinator Laura Downs for making this transformative experience possible.
