Third Grade Puts Learning in Motion with Electric Car Races

A hallmark of the BFS Third Grade experience, the annual Car Races recently brought science, math, and creativity together in an exciting way. After studying electricity, circuits, and magnets in class with teachers Mr. Haupert and Mrs. Wiggins, students built their own electric cars using motors, battery packs, and switches, then designed custom car bodies at home.

At Race Day last week, held in The Enduring Light Theater, the entire school community and parents cheered on the students! The cars competed in three challenges: a timed race, a straight-line test, and a race on an inclined plane with and without weights. The Theater was also decorated with three student poems about their cars and sketches of them from several perspectives.

“All term, we’ve also been learning about mean, median, range, and mode in math,” noted Mr. Haupert. “The students collected all the data from the Car Races and used it to make tables and graphs with Ms. T in Science. From the results, they figured out how their cars compared. We learned a lot and had a lot of fun!”

The annual Car Races project remains a memorable event, blending hands-on learning with real-world application.
