Academics

As a Friends school, one of our core values is inspirational academics, described as follows:

We promote academic achievement within an environment of experiential learning to inspire curiosity, creativity, critical and analytical thinking, communication skills, and collaboration. We strive to meet high standards, to remain agile and innovate, and respect individual approaches to thinking and learning."

From Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, our academic program includes the core areas of language arts, math, social studies, science, and world languages. Each years curriculum builds on the strong foundation set in previous grades, preparing students to experience and discover underlying concepts and principles while emphasizing skill development, analytic thinking, collaboration, creativity, and higher levels of applied academic reasoning. Along the way, technology integration increases with the use of MacBooks, Chromebooks, laptops, and interactive smartboards. Throughout their course of study at BFS, in developmentally-appropriate ways, students develop their skills, talents, and interests in special areas of art, music, woodworking, physical education, mindfulness, service learning, and human development. A hallmark of our academic program is the emphasis we place on the ability of each student to present themselves and their work. At every grade level, BFS students learn to be poised, articulate advocates, and engaged, empathic listeners.
