World Languages

French Award CeremonyWorld Languages at BFS

Two of our key values are Connected Communityand Stewards of our World, and we believe that the active study of a second language will empower our students to participate in the global community through a rigorous curriculum, travel, and work. By learning a second language from an early age, BFS students gain an awareness and appreciation for other cultures worldwide.

All students in grades K-4 are immersed in French. This early exposure creates a solid basis for acquisition and enhances the ability to learn other languages. Through group activities, role-play, games, and songs, students develop both oral and aural proficiency. As students progress through Middle School, they transition to a more traditionally structured language program.

Student Service Trip to Ecuador

Starting in 5th Grade, students may choose to continue with French or begin study in Spanish. The Upper School programs are equivalent to a Level I high school course, preparing students for a Level II course (or higher) in 9th grade. The courses engage students in activities for all three modes of communication: Interpersonal (conversation), Interpretive (listening and reading), and Presentation (speaking and writing). Students are encouraged to think critically and to take risks by using all the elements. Opportunities for authentic language experiences are facilitated through technology, a French exchange program, JEM trips, field trips, and visiting speakers.
